Hardwood Rammer (Ramming Dolly Used by Foundry Moulders)
The ramming dolly is an essential tool for ramming sand into the moulding flasks/boxes correctly.
It is important that the sand is not layered by compacting into separate stratas with the butt of the rammer. If so these sand layers can seperate causing the mould to fall out.
Correct procedure is to use the wedge end to ram the sand arround the pattern which forces the sand downwards and sideways at the same time ensuring that the sand is bonded as one solid mass. The butt end of the rammer is used to flatten and compress the final layer prior to strickling it level.
Good quality rammers are always made from hardwood with a coating of linseed oil to prevent water absorption
