When melting metal slag/dross floats too the surface and is skimmed off with a drossing /skimming spoon. The spoon has holes in it to allow the molten metaldrain through leaving the dross/slag on the spoon for dispoal.
Use of suitable fluxes can cause the metal to separate more efficiently from the dross.
A ladle coat paint can be applied to metal tools to give a non stick effect and to prevent iron pick up when melting aluminium which can cause machining problems.
